The Park of Walls of Verona

For the third here Verona will host international projects during the winter. Verona is a very famous city (do you remember Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare???) in the North East of Italy; it is a very touristic place with a long history and culture; rich of historical monuments, first of all the famous Arena (the ancient Roman Theatre). Even it is a great example of fortified town, in fact the walls and the surrounding area is going to become a Park. Unfortunately some part of the area is still damaged and abandoned. Legambiente is deeply involved in the restoration and revaluation of a great green space around. The final goal is to restore a part for the park between four bastions of the XIX cent. and remains of walls of ‘XVI cent.
So 3 short term vols will work toghether with 3 EVS vols in different activities: custody of the Park (opening and closing the gates), gardening, cleaning. Even they will collaborate with the local group of Legambiente in other activities as guiding tourists through the park and other Legambiente project. They will work about 30 hours per week.
IMPORTANT: volunteers are expected to speak a Latin language (French, Spanish or Italian)
Location: Verona (capital city of Veneto), North East of Italy
Accomodation: house inside the Park “Raggio di Sole”, very close to the centre of the town (two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, bigger room for meeting with all volunteers).
Terminal: closest airport and railway station are in Verona

Agricultural Regional Park South Milan
Project: workcamp takes place in the ancient farm of Santa Brera, an old agriculture farm existing since the IX century. It has been restructured short time ago using the materials and the principles of the biological architecture. Now it’s the centre of the farm Terra and Acqua (Earth and water), a co-operative group that develops projects to bring back life and movement to the territory and to the country-side around, creating the right conditions for an harmonic and productive balance between the environment and its inhabitants, respecting the agriculture traditions of the place. From November 1999 it has started the cultivation according to biological and permacultural rules that foresee a particular study about the position of plants in order to optimise the energies for the cultivation and collection.
The farm is situated in the Agricultural Regional Park South Milan. This part of the region, always exploited by the agriculture, has also an important artistic and architectural history like the Abbeys of Chiaravalle, Mirasole and Viboldone, the castles of Tolcinasco and Zibido, other rural villages and the network of big farms.
Work: Volunteers, co-ordinated by experts, will work in the planting of almost 13.000 trees inside the farm and in the placement of the necessary protection for the new plants.

Introduction
Legambiente is running since 1999 the ex Convent San Giorgio, a Voluntary Service Permanent Centre that has been hosting hunderds of volunteers in dozens of national and international workcamps, 12 EVS Projects and many long-term volunteers. The Convent is in Goriano Valli, in Abruzzo about 2 hours from Rome, in the Regional Park of Sirente Velino in a montain area. It is fully restored and furnished with bio-architectural standards.
Legambiente is running a big project based in the Convent that aims to bring new economic, touristic and above all cultural and spiritual "movements" in an area very depressed from these points of views; the challenge is even more interesting because it is linked to an economic "self-financing" pattern of development, without asking money to public institutions and in this viewpoint the Voluntary Service have a base and inescapable role to start and to manage ambitious activities as the one of the Convent. It sums up the positive values necessary (on a local level but extendible on planetary level) to tie themes like Peace, Solidarity and Ecologism. We think that for the realization of the idea is necessary that a series of intellectual and spiritual forces, of positive thoughts and energies flow in the same direction.
The Project
This project is an attempt to show that a different world is possible avoiding waste of energy and food and using our force in a clever way. The project includes also the garden (originally part of the property of the Convent) where there is a small Factory of animals with chickens, ducks, gooses, pigeons, goats, ships, rabbits,…). We practice organic farming and experiment new methods of clean agriculture like permaculture.
In this place we host for the forth year international volunteering projects of three weeks since December 2003 until June 2004 .
The work
Volunteers will participate to the life of the Convent together with the staff and long term volunteers from EVS (European Voluntary Service). Work will include different activities in the structure: cleaning, gardening. Besides there will be some environmental activities in the Park: path restoring, realisation of signs and of illustrative boards.
Location: Goriano Valli is in the Centre of Italy, in the region called Abruzzo, about 3 hours by bus from Rome
Terminal: The nearest international airports are Pescara and Rome.
Inscription Fee: 130Euro to be paid at arrival.
