CIEE18 Coastal & Alcatraz Trails 7:
November 30 – December 20, 2003
The Project: Volunteers will be working with a variety of hand tools (shovels, rakes, pruning saws, etc.) While the work does not require super-human strength, it is physical. Volunteers may be moving rock and dirt, digging post holes, cutting back trees, carrying heavy tree branches, building staircases, retaining wall, drainage dips, fence line, plant re-vegetation, out sloping trail tread and more! Similar work will also be carried out on Alcatraz. Volunteers will take a free ferry to get to this work site. The workweek is Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday are the days off. There will be a South District Roads & Trails employee or intern supervising the volunteers’ work.
Location: San Francisco, California: more than 16 million people visit the city each year to enjoy San Francisco's natural beauty, world-class arts and recreation, and famous landmarks. Conde Nast Traveler magazine has repeatedly ranked San Francisco the No. 1 city in the United States to visit. Some things to see: Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Haight Street, Golden Gate Park, Alcatraz and more. For more information check out the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s website: www.sfchamber.com, or www.sfvisitor.org
San Francisco is in the Pacific Standard Time Zone of the U.S., 8 hours behind GMT, and 3 hours behind New York.
Accommodation: Building #40 is located at the Main Post area of the Presidio of San Francisco, at the corner of Moraga & Mesa streets. It is a former army barrack. There will be 2-3 people to a room with beds and mattresses, but no linens.
