Baladna’s 2004 Elibon Workcamp
Baladna - 01
Dates and Place: 15-29/8/2004 in Elibon, Eastern Galilee
Hosting Organization: Baladna and Elibon Municipality
Work Type: Village beautification and youth activities
Number of Volunteers: 15 internationals, 20 locals
Participation Fee: 175 Euros (Covers accommodation and food; participants pay for their travel)
Accommodation: In a municipal school
Elibon is an Arab village in the eastern part of the Galilee, with a mixed Christian-Muslim population. With 4000 inhabitants, Elibon dates from over two hundred years ago and sits atop a mountainous plain.
Baladna is organizing its’ second work camp in Elibon in cooperation with the Elibon municipal office, which has provided a local school to serve as the work camp’s base. The camp will be divided into two main activities. First, local and international participants will engage in much-needed beautification activities in the village. These include painting public buildings in the historic old city, and some maintenance and renovation work. Second, the work camp will directly engage with village youth and improve their English and intercultural learning through structured activities. The majority of the work camp will be in Elibon. However, to enhance participants’ understanding of the Arab-Palestinian situation within Israel, two days of work will be in one of the nearby villages unrecognised by the Israeli state and without government services, Arab-el-Naem.
Beyond the work camp, participants will participate in cultural activities in the evenings, such as Arab-Palestinian music and dance. They will learn about the region’s historic importance regarding issues such as the confiscation of Arab lands by the state. Elibon is mid-way between two important sites, the Christian city of Nazareth to the south and the Tiberius Lake to the east, and participants will visit them on fieldtrips mid-way through the work camp.

Dates and Place: July 26th to August 10th , 2004, Sakhnin
Hosting Organization: Baladna and Sakhnin Municipality
Work Type: Public Garden and School restoration.
Number of Volunteers: 15 internationals, 20 locals
Participation Fee: 175 Euros (Covers accommodation and food; participants pay for their travel)
Accommodation: The Sakhnin Pedagogical Center
Sitting in a valley and surrounded by mountains Sakhnin lies in the Galilee region in the North of Israel. The town has existed for some 3500 years and contains Holy sites for Muslims, christians and Jews. Today Saknin has a population of 25,000, with a mixed Christian-Muslim ,who live together with a high level of mutual respect and intergration
Baladna is organizing its Sakhnin work camp in cooperation with the Sakhnin Municipality. Participants will engage in two main activities within the town. Firstly they will assist in the restoration of an old public garden in the center of Sakhnin which will involve landscaping and planting activities. Volunteers will also carry out rennovations of an old school, largely consisting of painting, cleaning, woodwork, ironwork, and construction of doors The municipality has arranged for work camp volunteers to be accommodated in the Saknin pedagogical center for the duration of their stay.
Beyond the work camp, participants will engage in cultural activities in the evenings, such as Arab-Palestinian music and dance. They will learn about the region’s historic importance in the frictions between the Israeli state and the Arab community regarding land confiscation, and it’s role in the creation of the annual land day protests. A field visit to some of the nearby Arab unrecognized villages, which receive no government services, will be included. Sakhnin is close to the town of Nazareth a dynamic, ancient city famous for its place in Christian tradition. Volunteers will have the chance to visit the city and the Sea of Galilee which is nearby.
