NICE/08 Minamata (Kumamoto) 10/03-24/03 ENVI 14 vols. (7 int.)
Organized together with Minamata International Exchange Supporters since 92. There was a big
tragedy of public pollution 40 years ago. Though it’s completely safe now, the image of Minamata is
still “dirty” and some people are discriminated to get jobs or to marry. By 10 years workcamps plan,
we’ve been creating a forest on the reclaimed land to bear new lives as a symbol of revival, with strong
wish of the patients. This place is very important for the world to reflect on modern industrialization.
W: The main work will be to transplant the baby trees seeded in the workcamps since 95 and collect fallen leaves to covered the soil around the trees. We will teach English to local kids.
We will support repair in the area that the calamity generated. Part of Greening Asia.
S: Future plan of Minamata and Greening Asia. Bring some info.!
P: Home stay in weekend and if lucky, participation in the kids festival.
A: Community center. Cooked by volunteers.
L: South west in Kyushu island. People are cheerful and many of man like to drink sake!!
If lucky, you could enjoy parties under cherry flowers!
T: Fukuoka (3 hours by train). From Osaka, 6 hours by bullet train or 12 hours by midnight bus.
Q: Some Japanese language are very helpful to communicate with local kids.
