The place
Laurentino 38 is at the outskirts of Roma, about 20 kms away. Even if it is formally part of the Municipality of Roma, it represents a world quite separate from the town. Most of the people who live in this place work in town: as a result the district turns out to be a “dormitory” for the most of the residents who mainly belongs to the working class with . It is not a ugly place in itself but not many things happen here which may be sometimes be a difficult situation especially for young people who have to go to town for any need of socialisation or entertainment they may have.
Background and aims of the camp
Lunaria organizes the camp together with the “PONTE D’INCONTRO”. This organisation is sponsored by the Municipality of Roma. Ponte d'Incontro was founded in 1993 by a group of university students: the aim of the association is to create places where children with social difficoulties can be together. at the outskirts of Rome. The activities offered are: an introduction to sports such as volleyball and football; residential holidays in the nearby mountains and manual activities. The association does not require any fee to the children. All the members of the staff of Ponte d'Incontro are volunteers (about 20 persons aged between 18-35); the children that attend to the activities are about 50-60. The centre is in a building that would need to be repaired
The work
The work will have two main directions. Volunteers will be involved in animation activities for the local youngsters. Volunteers will work along with the staff and the volunteers of “ PONTE D’INCONTRO”. It will be very helpful if you can play an instrument or you can do some juggling or you have other artistic skills to perform. So this part will also depend on what you can do. The other part of the work will see the group of volunteers working in the maintenance of a football playground and they will probably paint a murales. During the camp some excursions in the centre of Rome together with the youngsters are scheduled.
Food and lodgement
Volunteers will sleep in a house with bathrooms, showers and a kitchen. Meals cooked by volunteers at turn.
