YVC- JAVVA - UNDP

Animation to children victims of “agent orange” and cleaning of Halong Bay beaches.

24/12/04 – 09/01/05

Number of volunteers: 7 international volunteers + 7 Vietnamese volunteers.

Project Focus: Disabled children + environment

PROJECT: This will be the first international camp organized in Vietnam by the Youth Volunteer Club with the help of JAVVA and the United Nations. The camp will be based in a centre created by old American, German, French, Japanese and Vietnamese veterans converted to pacifism.

The veterans, willing to heal the scars of the wars, hosts in the center almost 100 children giving them as well a chance to study. The children are all affected by congenital malformations due to the broad use by the American of “agent orange” during the war in Vietnam. The international and Vietnamese volunteers will organize games and social activities for the New Year Eve party. The children, with the help of the volunteers, will have a chance to set up a small photograph exhibit. During one of the week-ends the volunteers will travel to Halong Bay (classified by UNESCO as a world natural heritage) to clean up the beach. Many tours and cultural activities will be organized by the Youth Volunteer Club including a week-end trip to Hué. This project will be a very special way to discover such a beautiful country as Vietnam with Vietnamese volunteers as well as starting 2005 in a unique way!

ACCOMODATION: The volunteers will stay either at the centre, or at Hanoi’s Campus. Still to be decided if it is possible to live with some local families. A camping resort will be set up in Halong Bay.

WHERE: The centre is in a small town 15 minutes away from Hanoi.

COSTS: The participants might be asked to contribute with US$150 if external sponsors will not support the project.

FINAL REMARKS: Please, take with you small gifts for the children, as well as pictures of your own town/city and simple cooking recepies. Make sure to take with you cameras and video cameras. Any musical instrument will be welcome! A JAVVA’s member is now living in Hanoi. It will be possible for any of you to stay for free at his place for a couple of days before the camp will start. Finally, remember to get all the necessary vaccinations
