Project description:
La "Maison des enfants de La Roue" (the "House of the children of the Wheel") is a project of reception for the children living in the district of “La Roue” in Anderlecht (Brussels). The children, aged 6 to 12 years, are accommodated (for free) from Monday to Friday after school. Main activity is assistance with the duties but the organizers also propose creative workshops (theatre, etc.), sport and cultural activities. The House remains opened during the summer holidays and propose various activities to the children.
Location:
In 1920, in the district of the Wheel in Anderlecht, social services start the construction of a “garden city” with 688 houses. Compared to the urban housing concepts from the industrial times, this project shows a quite new logic. What were promoters, town planners and architects ‘s objectives? They wanted to offer to the working class a pleasant life environment (that would remain cost effective for the real operator). Today, the district of the Wheel is a village in the city.
Work:
1/2 working time (in the morning) is manual activities: Insulation of the attic, painting (inside the house).
1/2 working time (in the afternoon): animation activities with the children of the district (after midday).
Accommodation:
In the house of district La "Maison des enfants de La Roue" and under tents. Take a mattress, a sleepingbag with you!
Arrival:
In front of the ticket office of "Bruxelles centrale" train station.
Specific Information:
For this type of work camp, the contact with the children is very important so it is essential for the volunteer to have a little notions in French. Volunteers must have a good knowledge of community activities (dances, games, song, music, handicrafts, etc.) and be able to be in charge of a small group. You will play, dance and move!
