CIEE12 LYNDHURST NEW YORK STATE 28/8-17/9 ENVI / AGRI 10
HOST: Lyndhurst is a 67 acre estate owned by The National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Gothic Revival Mansion, which is the focal point of the estate, is known as one of America’s greatest architectural monuments. The property is also home to 15 other historic buildings, as well as the first private metal constructed greenhouses in America. The job of the National Trust is to encourage public support in preserving historic buildings and landscapes that are of significance to American history and culture. www.lyndhurst.org
LOCATION: Tarrytown, New York is located in Westchester County, a suburban area about 20 miles north of New York City. The train station is a short walk from Lyndhurst. The weather can range from 18-32C so be sure to bring a variety of clothes.
PROJECT: Most all work will be outside. Most days the volunteers will assist the Horticulturist with general maintenance of the landscape: debris removal, weeding, vine removal, and mulching. The volunteers may also have an opportunity to work with the restoration crew on some of the buildings.
Work will be preformed Monday through Friday. Work hours are from 8am – 3pm. It’s usually hot out while working so there are lots of breaks during the day. We are looking for volunteers who are hard workers and don’t mind doing repetitive tasks.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Shared living space in a building. One room for 4 people; one room for 6 people. Full kitchen with all necessities, full bath with 2 showers. Volunteers must bring sleeping bag or equivalent, and a towel. Pillows and beds are provided. Volunteers will prepare meals for the whole group so bring unique recipes from home to share with the other volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with money for food as a group and will plan meals together.
