CPI 05 - MATERA 02: 03/06-21/06 International RENO/ANIM/CULT
* 15 Volunteers in each workcamp in City of Matera, Basilicata Region
PROJECT:
30 years ago, in 1975, MCP-Italia (former name of YAP-Italy) organised 4 international workcamps aiming to the renovation of some historical sites of the old city of Matera, well known for its troglodytes houses still occupied at the end of the 50’s (I Sassi di Matera), its cavernous and rupestral churches from the 12th century and the numerous movies shot in the city from the late 40’s (Pasolini, Rosi, Tornatore…) until the recent “Passion of Christ”. The old city has also been on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage since 1993.
The historical local animator of these historical workcamps and FAI, the Italian Fund for Environment, are now collaborating with YAP to celebrate this anniversary and start a new long term cycle of international voluntary service actions in Matera.
For 2005, four new projects will take place in the “Sassi”(stones), as a starting point for a long term project. All the projects will have the same organisation: The main part of the work (usual organisation, 5-6 hours a day, 5 days a week) will be dedicated to the cleaning, renovation and rebuilding of the paths in the oldest part of the Sassi (14th century), especially the ones surrounding an “in construction” anthropological museum dedicated to the very specific history of Matera. Some other manual works inside the caves (mainly cleanings) and on certain public buildings of the old city is also programmed. The last part of the project will be to participate in the creation and organisation of cultural and artistic animations in the streets of the old city, like happenings, live music… The goals are multiple. The first one is to make some international and intercultural animation in a city that is indeed wonderful but too calm in the summer. This will benefit local youth and general. The second one is to stress the major importance of this world heritage for the city and encourage the local administration and town-hall to take in charge more of the renovation of the oldest part of the Sassi, still abandoned for its biggest part…This specific part will be organised and performed by the volunteers themselves in collaboration with local artists, craftsmen and cultural organisations from Matera.
ACCOMMODATION:
Volunteers will live in the dependencies of one of the churches of Matera, inside the Sassi area, few hundred meters from their manual working site. All basic needs will be provided but volunteers will be in charge of the cleaning in their common spaces. Meals will be taken in common, cooked by the volunteers themselves but some of them will be regularly taken in a local partner restaurant.
LOCATION: Matera is the second biggest city of the Basilicata region, in the south of Italy.
TERMINAL: Bari or Napoli
