Description of Workcamp:
REGION.- Region of Pa? Vasco. Province of Alava.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- For the moment the work to be carried out
will be aimed at meeting the following main objectives:
From a scientific view point, the most relevant point will be get
to know, in as much detail as possible, all about a middle to
upper class large urban dwelling, from the height of the Roman
Empire until towards its end.
From a didactical point of view, and due to its major
architectural value and possibilities, it will be a case of
making a whole home visible and understandable.
This will be done using the following methodology:
An archaeological excavation with thorough archaeological
documentation (current state, extensions, explorations).
Identification of the dwelling's lay-out
Consolidation and "museumisation" work.
PARTICIPANTS PROFILE.- When enroling, participants should show a
certificate proving they have or are studying Humanities, History
or Archaeology.
PROPOSAL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL WORKCAMP.- The idea behind setting
up an international work camp in Iru?/Veleia is to:
Offer youngsters the possibility of collaborating on a major
archaeological research programme which will become one of the
Basque Country's most emblematic sites.
Obtain direct experience of some of the main archaeological field
procedures and techniques.
Get to know a little bit more about the Basque Country's past and
cultural heritage. To do this we have prepared a programme of
activities (every day from Monday-Friday): based on
archaeological excavation and structure consolidation tasks. All
with the supervision of professional archaeologists.
The activities programme held every afternoon will included
teaching and training activities (an approach to archaeological
techniques and materials and their basic processing: talks and
seminars on Iru?/Veleia, its historical and cultural context).
These will be led and co-ordinated by professional archaeologists
and other specialists members of the site's research team.
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD.- In a local school.
LOCATION.- Iru? is 12 km. from Vitoria-Gasteiz.
LANGUAGES SPOKEN.- English and Spanish. All volunteers must have
good spoken english.
THINGS TO BRING.- Sleeping bag, work clothes and gloves, warm and
waterproof clothes, trainers and walking boots, international
sanitary card for the EU volunteers.
