In Wengcheng camp
* The project
The project will consist of two weeks stay in the workcamp which is situated in the midst of the Xinjing village. Xinjing village is about 90 km away from the main city of Hainan Island, Haikou city.
Xinjing village consist of 90 household, a closely related community, very rich in culture.
The main activities of the camp will be :
Developing friendship among the international volunteers and with the local people.
Cultural exchange and interaction sessions will be planned according to the need and
interest of the participants. You will have the opportunity to learn the rich Chinese
culture and history too.
Teaching the local children and students to speak English in a creative way. Use your own way and your own idea to communicate with them. But teaching English is only a mean to let the local people have direct contact with foreigners.
Community service work at the camp will consist of light construction work or some environmental and health education project or helping in the farms depending on the interest of the group.
You will experience the farmer's life in this rural China village as there will be farm stay activities scheduled during the camp. You may expect ample visits from the local villagers at all time at the camp site, but none of them will stay overnight.
Be reminded that the work and other activities at the camp is a tool to work together for the development of your communication skill and to build up friendship. There is no pressure to finish anything quick. Just take part in the activities at your own pace.
During the holidays you are free to relax at the center or go to interesting places in the neighborhood. There is a beach about 4 km away from the center. Also the kitchen chores, cooking and cleaning up, will be arranged fairly among the participating volunteers and the local volunteers.
* Aim of the workcamp
During the work camp you will work together with other volunteers and local students and villagers of different ages.
The aims are :
To develop friendship between the participants and the local students, teachers and villagers.
To teach some local students English, and more important, let them meet friends from other parts of the world so that their mental horizon expands.
To help the villagers with community service projects for the betterment of their living environment.
* Accomodation
The place where you will stay is a traditional Chinese style house. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be dormitory style.
The water supply is from a well nearby.
Handwashing your own clothes will be a necessity.
The income of the people in the Xinjing area is basically from farming activities. They grow rice, vegetables, fruit trees, chicken, pigs, frogs, etc. You may be invited to their homes and farms.
Thinks at all times as environmental friendly subjects; use resources with care and modestly.
* Food and health
There are very little health problems to be expected. Hainan has hygienic conditions and we will prepare the food at the camp.
A clinic with good doctor is about 1.5 km away from the camp and there are modern hospitals in Wencheng City which is about 30 km away.
The food at the camp will be mostly vegetarian and fishes. Maybe sometimes with very little chicken or pork, depending on who is cooking. On trips outside the camp, one may eat as one wishes where there is food available.
