DESCRIPTION: Golden Gate National Recreation Area is the largest urban park in the
world, a part of the National Park Service. Their mission is to preserve and enhance the
natural environment and cultural resources of the coastal lands north and south of the
Golden Gate, in the challenging context of a large urban setting. Volunteers will perform a
variety of trail work tasks, including but not limited to: removing evasive plants, out-sloping
trail tread surfaces, building cable fence, restoring historic gun batteries, building
railroad-tie stair cases, repairing beach sand-ladders and fence-lines. Similar work will also
be carried out on the famous prison island, Alcatraz. Volunteers will take a free ferry to get
to this work site.
ACCOMODATIONS: Volunteers will stay on the Main Post of the Presidio of San
Francisco in a former US Army Barrack. It includes a kitchen, separate bathrooms,
showers for men and women, and a washer and dryer. Volunteers will share a small room
with one, or two, fellow volunteers. Food will be provided by GGNRA, and the volunteers will
prepare their meals together. Volunteers will have direct access to public transportation,
entertainment, and attractions of San Francisco.
TERMINAL: San Francisco International Airport (17 miles), Oakland International
Airport (20 miles)
REQS: The work is physical but does not require immense strength or special skills. Bring
leather working boots, rain gear, and clothing for cold and wet weather.
COMMENTS: We will do our best to accommodate anyone with any physical
impairment and we encourage any and everyone to participate. This type of activity will
require group participation.
