PARTNER : Hermete is a social cooperative created in 1997 that mainly works in the Valpolicella area. Hermete aims to realize socio-cultural projects for the community and the territory, having quality and innovation as big targets. Hermete highly believes in networking, this is why it operates at a local, national, and European level with partners that seriously and passionately believe that education and culture are essential tools to the development and growth of our society.

PROJECT : The work camp is organized by Hermete and is the eighth work camp organized in Valpolicella. The goal of the work camp is to create opportunities for sharing and encourage cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local community. This is going to be achieved through the active participation of the volunteers in some community projects of Hermete. Currently, Hermete is carrying out several projects involving young people from the area, who are not studying or working. The volunteers will mainly help in two of these projects. One is called “Ortiche'' and is focused on the implementation of a community garden. The other is called “Sherwood” and is a social carpentry in which are realized various wood objects and games. This last project is also involved in the International Festival of Street Games that takes place in Verona in September. WORK : The volunteers will participate in the ongoing Hermete projects, spending one week working in the social carpentry and the other week helping out in the community garden. They will contribute to the projects by helping in some simple manual work that could consist of painting, sanding wood, helping in some wood construction or renovation, and activities in the garden. They will collaborate with Hermete staff and the youngsters involved in the project. Volunteers will work more or less 5 hours per day for 5 days a week.

LOCATION AND LEISURE : The volunteers will sleep and work in the village of Fumane, a village in Valpolicella hills. Here the landscape is mainly rural and is covered with its famous vineyards. The principal activity of the region is winemaking. In their free time, the volunteers will have the chance to meet local people, participate in local events, and explore and discover the nearby cities, lake, and all the things that this territory has to offer. TERMINAL : The nearest airport is Verona Airport “Valerio Catullo”. Verona city can also be easily reached by train from Milan, Venice, and Bologna. From Verona train station there is a bus to reach Fumane.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD : The group will be hosted in “Hermete headquarters” in the village of Fumane. In the house, volunteers will find a kitchen, a bathroom, and a garden outside. The volunteers will sleep in the same room. They will have the shared responsibility to cook their meals and manage to keep the place clean. Food for the main meals will be provided according to the special needs of the volunteers and will be a prevalently vegetarian menu.

The project includes two international volunteer camps that will take place from May 9 to 23 and from May 20 to June 3 together with local volunteers of the "Consulta Giovanile Palazzolo Acreide" and "Fare Palazzolo". The idea is to manage the " International Festival of Classical Theater for Young People " which has been performed regularly for 25 years in Palazzolo, a UNESCO heritage site, at the Ancient Greek Theater of Akrai. The purpose is to support the management of the festival and the 80 schools that will participate in the festival. The volunteers of the workcamps will take care of the reception of the young actors who will play in those days. The aim is to coordinate the whole event only with an young and motivated group of people, who will have during the experience the opportunity to match with more than 1600 actors/young people from all over the world.

The volunteers of the camps will be active about 5/6 hours a day with different tasks and they will be organized daily in two rotating groups. A group will take care of the activities at the Greek Theater (reception and order service 8.30 am-01.30 pm) while another group will take care of the activity at the Youth Hostel for the lunch organization and for the afternoon cultural activities dedicated to the actors (11.30am-4.30pm).

Palazzolo is a quiet town of 9000 inhabitants and is located 30km from the most beautiful beaches in Sicily! (DO NOT FORGET THE SWIMSUIT !!) During the work period there will be a very strong sun so there is a risk of burns. In the evening, you will have fun in the pubs and in the most visited places of the town, which is full of architectural and naturalistic beauties. There will be games and entertainment to spend the evenings with the local group .... we will not get bored!

Volunteers will go to live in a hostel with comfortable rooms. There will be a kitchen where they can cook independently. There is no canteen service but the volunteers will have to cook on their own or choose to have lunch (lunch only) with the actors who will be guests of the hostel during the camps. The food for the kitchen will be provided by us and if there are special requests we will try to satisfy them. The hostel has been recently renovated and has bathrooms and showers. We will supply sheets and blankets or other things if necessary.
