Come and bring the gardens and park of Valbelle Castle back to life!
The Castle of Valbelle domain is divided into two parts, one under the responsibility of the commune of Tourves and the other at the departmental department of Sensitive Natural Spaces. The castle and the park are the subject of a major restoration and enhancement project to bring back to life the former gardens and paths of the domain.
You will therefore participate in this great project by restoring the dry-stone walls and the built walls on the domain where it is planned later to recreate the ancient gardens with old species.

Partner:
On this project, Concordia has two partners. The commune of Tourves and the departmental department of sensitive natural areas, both of which are owners and managers of the Valbelle’s Castle and its domain. 2020 will be the inauguration of this new collaboration, which aims to bring the castle back to life with the dual objective of preserving the heritage and enhancing the tourist value of the commune.
Location and leisure:
Tourves is a very pretty town in the South-East of France with about 5000 inhabitants. The town perfectly combines cultural and environmental heritage and outdoor activities are numerous:
- Swimming and walking along the Caramy river
- Guided and historical tour of Valbelle Castle and its link with ancient Egypt
- Hiking in the Ste Baume Massif
- Swimming in the municipal swimming pool
- Visit of the communes of St Maximin la Ste Baume, Brignoles
Other leisure activities can be offered such as visiting the Bizzz association and the Red Mouths Museum, organizing a football match, etc.
Accommodation and food:
You will be accommodated at the communal stadium in tents with access to changing rooms for showers, you will participate in the organization of group life and the preparation of meals. The stadium is located 10 minutes’ walk from the castle and 5 minutes from the village centre. A budget will be allocated to the camp leaders and you will participate in grocery shopping and the preparation of meals, giving priority to healthy and local products.

Remember to bring clothes and shoes for work and hiking. Nights can be chilly, so bring a good warm sleeping bag and a floor mat or air mattress. Also bring a small backpack, a water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
You can also bring some specialities from home, a musical instrument or games!
The town of Tourves being located 50km away from the meeting point (Aix en Provence bus station), it is important that you plan to arrive at the meeting point the latest in the afternoon. We ask you to be on time at the meeting point written later in the infosheet.
Project:
Take part in the valorization of the historical heritage of Cabannes, a charming Provencal village close to Avignon, Cavaillon, the Parc of Alpilles and other regional jewels. You will discover towns and landscapes of Provence region with intoxicating scents, lulled by the song of the cicadas.
The chapel of Saint Michel, is a 12th century building with an extension dating from the 17th century. It is the oldest monument of the village, built at the intersection of two ancient Roman roads and at the origins of the village. By participating in this work camp, you will contribute to the restoration of the Provencal heritage; you will discover both techniques of craft restoration and regional specialties.
Work:
You will continue the restoration of the facade walls of the chapel St Michel which began in 2017. This year, you will realize the work on the part of the building that is dated in the 12th century. You will be:
1 Cleaning and purging the walls of any external elements (vegetation, concrete, etc.)
2 Re-grouting the mortar joints
3 Replacing missing parts
You will also have the opportunity to practice working with lime plaster on the northern facade.
Location and leisure:
Cabannes is a very dynamic, small Provencal village of 4500 inhabitants, in the heart of Provence, offering a wide range of cultural, patrimonial, and environmental discoveries. You will participate in the festivities of the village, including the “fête de la Madeleine” and July 14th (French national day), and see the Avignon festival nearby.

Avignon TGV train station.

Marseille or Paris.
Accommodation and food:
You will be accommodated at the socio-cultural building in the center of Cabannes. Bring your sleeping bag and your sleeping mat or inflatable mattress. You will share the different collective tasks and prepare meals together. The budget will be managed by your camp leaders and you will participate in the grocery shopping and the preparation of meals, favoring the local and seasonal products.

Note that you will be working on scaffoldings.
Please bring: working gloves and shoes, casual clothing, hat/cap, sunglasses, sun cream, mosquito repellant, swimming suit.
As the accommodation and workcamp area are not nearby, you will have to take the bicycles which will be provided.
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
