PROJECT: ‘What squeaks in the grass?’ is a two-week artistic project with kids and youngsters coming from or living during summer in a small village in central Poland. This will be the third edition of the theatrical project in that village after the previous ones in 2017 and 2018 called ‘Flows’ and ‘Whispers of forest’ (more information available on facebook: Lato w Teatrze Zambski Kościelne’).

This year we’ll explore the hidden secrets of nearby meadows surrounding the village to show our participants all the creative opportunities available in their vicinity and encourage them to look at these areas as they have never seen them before.

As a group of pedagogs, believing in the power of alternative education, we want to rely on child’s innate interest in discovering things, their will to learn and cooperate with others in order to support their self-confidence and self-reliance.

During the first week of project the participants will work together while having expeditions and workshops on the nearby meadows. At the end of the first week, we will build a camp where the workshops during the second week will take place.
The work during the project will be divided into 5 groups:
1. Meadow Kindergarten - for the youngest kids aged 6-7
2. Meadow editorial office - responsible for documentation and promotion of the project
3. Theatrical group
4. Musical group
5. Scenography group

WORK: During the two weeks of the project, volunteers will work on changeable shifts, for 4 hours every day. The tasks in which we will need help will include:
● delivering food from the local shop each morning of the project and serving lunch during a long break;
● taking care of participants during the breaks (there will be one long break during a day which requires organisation of games and activities for kids)
● taking part in the process of constructing the camp
● helping with making the scenography and decorations for the final performance,
● taking care of technical side during the final show;
We will also encourage our volunteers to come up with their own ideas, especially regarding the scenography and visual side of the camp.

LOCATION & LEISURE: The project takes place in Zambski Kościelne. It is a small village in central Poland by the river Narew. The beautiful surroundings of the village and the fact that it is not far from Warsaw (1,5 hour-drive) are the reasons why there is a huge number of people who spend their holidays every year there.

Zambski Kościelne can offer various activities for hikers, cyclists and all of those who appreciate the beauty of nature. There are a lot of walking and cycling paths in nearby forests and possibilities of water activities like canoeing or water bikes. Summer evenings can be spent by the river bank around a campfire sharing stories with friends or watching stars which are easily visible in the sky during the night.

For those who want to visit some other places in Poland, there are two options available. One of them is a short visit to a small town - Pułtusk, 15 km from Zambski Kościelne, or a one-day trip to the capital of Poland - Warsaw, easily reached from Pułtusk by bus.

TERMINAL: The nearest international airports are located in Modlin (60km) and Warsaw (95km). It is possible to travel from Warsaw to Pułtusk by bus where the car for the volunteers will be waiting to take them to Zambski Kościelne.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD: The volunteers will get a place to sleep at a primary school in the village where the project will also take place. They will be allowed to use one of the classrooms, kitchen and toilets. However, there are no showers at school, and the volunteers will have to go to the nearby parish house (300m) to take a shower. The volunteer’s room will be fitted with gym mattresses so it is necessary to take their own sleeping bags or blankets and pillows.

There will also be a lot of space outside if anyone is willing to put up a tent.

Some of the workcamp participants are going to be designated to prepare meals for everyone from the provided ingredients, everyday. Ingredients for vegetarian and vegan (if requested) diet will be also available.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: We are looking for open-minded, easygoing and creative people who are able to adjust to dynamic situation during the project. This kind of work requires a lot of patience, positive energy, and openness for any activities and tasks which may occur. Thinking outside the box and ability to find solutions to overcome current difficulties are highly required.

Taking into consideration the fact of building the camp on the meadow we’re looking for volunteers with a proper knowledge of using tools and experience in building wooden constructions. It would be a huge advantage for us to have someone like that in our team and also a possibility for the volunteer to have a real impact on the visual side of the camp.

Since all of the methods we use are based on manual skills which we use while working in all the existing groups, possessing such abilities will also be highly valued. Especially, when it comes to making decorations and scenography for the final performance.

Additionally, possessing police certificate is essential as we are going to work with kids and youngsters. Having pedagogy background will be a big advantage but, it is not necessary. The most important matter for us is to work with people who are eager to listen and follow children’s ideas and their interests.
