Project Location:
Worldwide Friends Iceland is opening a centre of environment and sustainability near to the crossroads to the West, South and North of Iceland. The centre is in the area of Hrutafjordur which a 36 km long fjord in Hunathing is vestra. In the neighbourhood you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, beaches full of drifted wood, Snæfellsnes peninsula, glaciers in the highlands, waterfalls, strong rivers, canyons and craters. The purpose of the centre is to protect the nature in the area and to raise the awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors which are coming to the area.
The house is more than 1.000 m2 and has 16 double rooms, two kitchens, several bathrooms and common areas, rooms for workshops and galleries. It has its own generator to produce electricity for heating and daily use. The condition of the generator is poor now and need to be fixed but we can also connect to the lines of the National power company in the meanwhile.
Work:
This camp has different kind of tasks. Some days we will focus on renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around and inside the house. We will also do some artwork with a local artist for example paintings and sculptures made of drifted wood. Other days we will clean the coastline, plant trees and fix paths in the area. We will give a special focus on sustainability and the volunteers will have workshops about different topics.
This work camp is a way to enjoy an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while they are exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.
Terminal:
Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík.
Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik
Accommodation and Food:
Worldwide Friends volunteers stay in the Worldwide Friends house offering basic facilities. Beds are provided; however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Wi-fi is available for free.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp; everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!

Additional information:
There is an extra participation fee of 400 euros for this workcamp. WF will arrange a minibus trip from Reykjavik to Brú and back again which is almost 400 km in total – this trip includes several stops where you will discover unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas and lava fields.
Leisure: WF Iceland will organise reasonably priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.
The area around the place is also great for hiking
We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.
