Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:

You will be hosted in a very special village. From 1961 to 1989, the Wall with its martial border fortifications ran right next to the village. It divided Germany into two parts and was part of the so-called Iron Curtain. The people of Hötensleben lived in a restricted zone for almost 30 years and always had the Wall in view. To this day, 400 metres of the border fortifications have been preserved as a memorial and are visited by many visitors. Here you can find an impression of the border memorial: http://www.grenzdenkmal.com
2025 marks the 35th anniversary of German reunification. This should be taken as a sign of hope for Germany, Korea and the whole world and from the basis for further discussions. Questions about war and peace, migration and its causes, isolation and violence are unfortunately still very topical issues today. This project in Hötensleben gives you the opportunity to learn more about the time of the Iron Curtain and the division of Germany and to reflect on what peace means to you and how you can contribute to it. At the end, you will present your personal perspective on the topic of "peace" to the local villagers and discuss it with them. German speakers are therefore particularly welcome.

    Description of work:

PEACE is the main theme of this project. The workcamp combines volunteering, learning from history, thinking about peace and the exchange with the local villagers in a special way.
+ Volunteering: There will be various smaller tasks in Hötensleben. You will be doing some maintenance work at the border memorial, mowing and building new wooden seating areas. Other small jobs for the local infrastructure will be added.
+ Learning from history: You will not only work on the border memorial, but will of course also be given a lot of background information on the history of the Iron Curtain and the division of Germany, as well as going on excursions to other thematically relevant places of interest.
Thinking about peace: What is Peace for you? When and how is peace in danger? Share your personal point of view and the reality in your home country with other volunteers and with local villagers.
+ Exchange with local villagers: Peace will be one topic to share and to discuss, but you will also get to know local associations and be able to exchange ideas about everyday life today. They are very excited to meet you and will be glad to share stories with you about their experience in this border area. It would be great if you can speak a bit of German and/or are able to communicate with a phone translator.

PROJECT: The local association Waldstock e.V. (https://waldstock.de/) promotes local youth activities in the small town of Pegnitz. Its members are very motivated and involved in organizing projects like concerts, film festivals or soccer cups. For more than 20 years, they have been coordinating the “Waldstock” festival, a so called “Umsonst und Draussen” - festival (“outside & free of charge”), which has become an important part of the cultural life in the town of Pegnitz and the region. Since 2013 the festival is supported by a small group of international Workcamp volunteers, who can enjoy the truly unique experience of becoming a part of the busy festival team. Here you can find a sneak peek on last years’ festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gst3Wuj6is4 .

WORK: You will help the organisers in all phases of the festival. On the first days, the main tasks will be setting up the stage and the campground on the site of the festival. You will also help to create the always charming and handmade decorations of the festival site and help with the disassembly of the whole structure and surroundings on the last day. While the festival is running, you should be available to the organisation and will be asked to assist in different areas: bar, stage, organisation, catering etc. You will work closely with the local people from the association! There is a plan for the build-up of the festival, nevertheless the schedule will be adapted to the always changing logistics of the event and you are expected to be flexible, patient and work autonomously within this plan. Volunteers should be prepared to work long and unusual hours, but also have some time between their shifts, which can be used to explore the festival and enjoy the music! Speaking or understanding basic German will be a plus!

PROJECT: This project is a first cooperation between the Youth Department in Horb and IBG. After visiting a workcamp in 2022, the Youth Department team in Horb has decided to organize one in their town too. This project has been developed with the integration office, the youth council and the municipal employees. Your work will significantly contribute to the well-being of the people living in the container village (refugees) but also to the local population by renewing, expanding and improving the outside infrastructure in Horb’s town center.

WORK: The community of Horb is counting on your help to extend and improve some of its public infrastructure like benches and urban gardening spaces in the city centre and at a new shared accommodation for refugees. Currently a shared accommodation for refugees for up to 150 people is being built in a "container village", very close to the Marmorwerk (Horb’s youth centre). The first refugees will probably move there in May. The Youth Department, the Integration Office and the Youth Council are counting on your help to make the outdoor area of the container village as well as other parts of Horb more beautiful and enjoyable for the residents. Your concrete tasks will be:
    • Build wooden raised beds for schools, kindergartens and the container village. Together with the municipal workers, you will help produce 40 raised beds for the various social institutions in the city. These will then be made available to children, young people and adults so that they can plant them with herbs and vegetables.
    • Restore benches in the city and put up new benches for the community shelter for refugees. A large number of the benches in the city of Horb urgently need to be restored so that they can be used by the citizens again. In addition, you will help build 10 new wooden benches for the new community shelter. These and the raised beds should make the outdoor area more beautiful and useful to the residents.
    • Refurbish community gardens to make them more usable and more attractive. In the city centre not far from the city hall, the community garden is to be expanded. The area hasn’t been maintained or used for years, and is to be restored together with the municipal workers so that various beds can be planted there. The garden will then be available to all interested citizens who do not have a garden at home.
The work will be led by a professional instructor, so no previous experience is needed. You will work around 30 hours per week, somewhere between 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday with a lunchbreak.

    ● 위치

LOCATION: Horb am Neckar is a beautiful town with 25.300 inhabitants, located on the banks on the Neckar river and surrounded by green hills. Horb is about 900 years old! You will feel its long history when exploring the town center. Between the church overlooking the town, the half-timbered houses, the old towers and gates and the narrow paved alleys, you will find many interesting and pretty sights there. At the weekend you will be able to visit further places in the region. Horb is located on the slopes of the Black Forest, which means that you can easily go for hikes there. With regional trains, you can reach cities like Tübingen (35mn) or Stuttgart (50mn) or even reach Lake Constance (2h to 2h30), the biggest lake in Germany. Plus, the locals have plenty of ideas and recommendations and they would be happy to spend time with you also during your free time, to make you discover their lovely region. On the last weekend of the workcamp, a concert in the Marmorwerk is already being planned for you!

    Next train station: Horb
Next international bus stops: Stuttgart, Ulm or Villingen-Schwenningen
Next airport (if you really have to take a plane): Stuttgart (STR)
MEETING POINT AND TIME: Horb train station (please try to arrive between 1pm and 7pm at Horb train station on July 1). You can check for connections from anywhere to Horb on www.bahn.com/en

    ● 숙박

ACCOMMODATION: You will stay at Horb’s youth house called Marmorwerk (the “marble factory” in German). The Marmorwerk has an equipped kitchen, common rooms where you will sleep on camp beds (please bring a sleeping bag with you!), toilets and a big outdoor area. To shower, you will need to walk 4-5 min to the town’s indoor swimming pool. The Marmorwerk is very central so it will take you only 5-7mn to walk to the supermarket and train station. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.
