Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:

This is the first collaboration between the city of Givors and Concordia. This project is the cornerstone of a partnership that we hope to build over time with many future projects around the restoration of the Saint-Gerald Castle. Committed to enhancing the value of its heritage, the city of Givors mobilizes the services of the Cultural Affairs who work specifically with an architect for this project. The links with the inhabitants, especially the youngest, will be built with the local associations of the territory.


Description of work:

Come and discover the Chateau Saint-Gerald, overlooking the Rhone valley from the heights of Givors, and participate in its restoration!
The castle was built in the 13th century and destroyed during the religious wars in 1591 by the Duke of Lesdiguieres. The ruins were rediscovered in 1974 during the destruction of the Old Givors and the construction of the Renaudie Stars, a remarkable architectural work labeled "20th century heritage". On the Saint-Gerald hill, the modern and the ancient co-exist and thus recall the rich history of this territory located a few kilometers from Lyon and Saint-Etienne. On the occasion of this first workcamp, you will work on securing the site by carrying out different tasks (clearing brush, restoring low walls, rehabilitating paths, developing spaces...) allowing the enhancement of the ruins of the castle and to encourage its rediscovery by the inhabitants.

Description of location and leisure:

The city of Givors (20,000 inhabitants) is located in the Lyon metropolitan area (famous for its food and wine culture among other things such as its cultural life), from which it is about 20 kilometers away (easily accessible by public transportation). Nearby, the cities of Vienne (Gallo-Roman sites) and Saint-Etienne (capital of Design), will complete the numerous opportunities of visits in the region. Crossed by the Viarhona (bicycle path from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea), Givors also offers beautiful walks mixing urban and natural spaces (orchards, gardens...). The Pilat Regional Natural Park is also nearby for hikes through magnificent landscapes.

Meeting Point and Time: The meeting point is set at the train station of GIVORS in the late afternoon on the 28th of July. The exact meeting time will be given with the infosheet which will be sent at the latest 4 weeks before the start of the workcamp. The train station is regularly served by trains from LYON allowing access from the TGV or from Saint-Exupery airport. If possible, please consider using low-carbon transportation (train and bus rather than airplane) for a sustainable international workcamp. For more information about trains: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/ If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress free travel.

Description of accommodation and food:

You will be accommodated in a charming apartment lent by the partner, in the heart of the city of Givors and in direct proximity to the site of the work. The rooms will be equipped for 3 to 4 people. You will have sanitary facilities in the apartment and some more will be accessible on the floor. You will be able to wash your clothes by hand. Together, you will participate in the organization of collective life (cleaning, activities...) and in the preparation of the meals (equipped kitchen), in turn, from products which will be bought in the vicinity (market three times a week at the bottom of the building). We wish to encourage vegetarian food with local and seasonal products while respecting the diets of the participants and to discover together the local cuisines. The accommodation is located near public buildings allowing access to Wifi networks.

Description of specific requirements: Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for them, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

Short remarks for the project:
Remember to take closed clothes and shoes for work, not fearing dirt. You will sleep in individual beds: remember to bring a sleeping bag as well as a fitted sheet and a pillowcase. In addition, bring waterproof clothing for your walks. Don't forget sun protection (hats, glasses, cream...), a water bottle and your bathing suit for swimming (pools, water sports centers...). If you want to share a bit of your culture (cooking recipes, traditional stories, unusual objects...), don't hesitate to bring a little piece of your country or region in your backpack and a small Bluetooth speaker to share your favorite Playlist!
