Description of work:

Come and discover the Château Saint-Gérald, overlooking the Rhône valley from the heights of Givors, and help restore it!

The castle was built in the 13th century and then destroyed during the religious wars in 1591 by the duke of Lesdiguières. The ruins were rediscovered in 1974 during the demolition of Vieux Givors and the construction of the Etoiles de Renaudie, a remarkable piece of architecture that has been awarded the "20th Century Heritage" label. On the hill of Saint-Gérald, the modern and the ancient coexist as a reminder of the rich history of this area just a few kilometres away from Lyon and Saint-Etienne. On this second project, you will be continuing the work to make the site safer by carrying out a variety of tasks (clearing undergrowth, restoring low walls, rehabilitating paths and landscaping), which will help to showcase the ruins of the castle and encourage local people to rediscover it.

Description of location and leisure:

The town of Givors (population 20,000) is located in the Lyon conurbation, some twenty kilometres from the city (easily accessible by public transport). Nearby, the towns of Vienne (with its Gallo-Roman sites) and Saint-Etienne (capital of design) complete the numerous opportunities for visits in the region. Crossed by the Viarhôna (cycle path from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea), Givors also offers some great walks combining urban areas with natural spaces (orchards, gardens, etc.). The Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat and the Monts du Lyonnais are also close by for walks through magnificent landscapes.

Meeting Point and Time: Meet at Givors SNCF station at 6pm. The station is regularly served by trains from Lyon, allowing access from the TGV or Saint-Exupéry airport. Description of accommodation and food:

You will be accommodated in a charming flat lent by the partner, in the heart of the town of Givors and very close to the site. The rooms will be set up for 3 to 4 people. You will have sanitary facilities accessible in your room. Others will be accessible upstairs. You will be able to do your laundry by hand.

Together, you will help to organise community life (cleaning, activities, etc.) and prepare meals (in a fully equipped kitchen), taking it in turns, using locally sourced products (market three times a week at the bottom of the building). Our aim is to encourage vegetarian eating using local, seasonal produce, while respecting participants' diets, and to discover local cuisine together. The accommodation is close to public buildings with Wi-Fi access.

Description of specific requirements: Bicycles will also be at your disposal for everyday trips and walks. It is necessary to know how to cycle to make the most of your stay. It is advisable to bring a personal helmet.

Short remarks for the project:
Remember to take closed clothes and shoes for the work that are resistant to dirt. You will be sleeping in individual beds: remember to take a sleeping bag as well as a fitted sheet and pillowcase. And don't forget waterproof clothing for your walks, sun protection (hats, glasses, sunscreen, etc.), a water bottle and your swimming costume for swimming (pools, water sports centres, etc.). If you'd like to share a little of your culture (cooking recipes, traditional stories, unusual objects...), don't hesitate to pack a little piece of your country or region in your backpack and a small Bluetooth speaker to share your favourite playlist ! On the last day (26/07), the departure time is usually set in the morning.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:

This is the first collaboration between the city of Givors and Concordia. This project is the cornerstone of a partnership that we hope to build over time with many future projects around the restoration of the Saint-Gerald Castle. Committed to enhancing the value of its heritage, the city of Givors mobilizes the services of the Cultural Affairs who work specifically with an architect for this project. The links with the inhabitants, especially the youngest, will be built with the local associations of the territory.

The castle was built in the 13th century and destroyed during the religious wars in 1591 by the Duke of Lesdiguieres. The ruins were rediscovered in 1974 during the destruction of the Old Givors and the construction of the Renaudie Stars, a remarkable architectural work labeled "20th century heritage". On the Saint-Gerald hill, the modern and the ancient co-exist and thus recall the rich history of this territory located a few kilometers from Lyon and Saint-Etienne. On the occasion of this first workcamp, you will work on securing the site by carrying out different tasks (clearing brush, restoring low walls, rehabilitating paths, developing spaces...) allowing the enhancement of the ruins of the castle and to encourage its rediscovery by the inhabitants.

The city of Givors (20,000 inhabitants) is located in the Lyon metropolitan area (famous for its food and wine culture among other things such as its cultural life), from which it is about 20 kilometers away (easily accessible by public transportation). Nearby, the cities of Vienne (Gallo-Roman sites) and Saint-Etienne (capital of Design), will complete the numerous opportunities of visits in the region. Crossed by the Viarhona (bicycle path from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea), Givors also offers beautiful walks mixing urban and natural spaces (orchards, gardens...). The Pilat Regional Natural Park is also nearby for hikes through magnificent landscapes.

Meeting Point and Time: The meeting point is set at the train station of GIVORS in the late afternoon on the 28th of July. The exact meeting time will be given with the infosheet which will be sent at the latest 4 weeks before the start of the workcamp. The train station is regularly served by trains from LYON allowing access from the TGV or from Saint-Exupery airport. If possible, please consider using low-carbon transportation (train and bus rather than airplane) for a sustainable international workcamp. For more information about trains: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/ If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress free travel.

You will be accommodated in a charming apartment lent by the partner, in the heart of the city of Givors and in direct proximity to the site of the work. The rooms will be equipped for 3 to 4 people. You will have sanitary facilities in the apartment and some more will be accessible on the floor. You will be able to wash your clothes by hand. Together, you will participate in the organization of collective life (cleaning, activities...) and in the preparation of the meals (equipped kitchen), in turn, from products which will be bought in the vicinity (market three times a week at the bottom of the building). We wish to encourage vegetarian food with local and seasonal products while respecting the diets of the participants and to discover together the local cuisines. The accommodation is located near public buildings allowing access to Wifi networks.

Description of specific requirements: Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for them, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
