Project location: Hveragerði is a small town of about 1,700 inhabitants that lies some 45 km east of Reykjavík. This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruits, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means ‘hot springs garden.’ Geothermal energy is Hveragerði’s lifeblood, and you probably won’t find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. Nearby you will find an even more geothermally active site: Gufudalur, the lovely ‘Steam Valley’ behind the town. This whole valley is full of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents.

Our host is a non-profit organisation called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patients’ own health. The clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. In the last years this ongoing camp has been the most popular camp in our organisation.

Work: The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will help with growing tomatoes, cucumbers and making tea made of Icelandic herbs and also do some environmental work around the property. The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses. Working hours are usually from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and volunteers will have a one-hour lunch break. We will give a special focus on global warming during the camp and the volunteers will have workshops about climate change. The issue of global warming is well known all over the world. The humanity must act in a more environmentally friendly way. The main goal of this project is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects’ participants. Within the project we will learn about green energy, sustainable householding, waste treatment, nutrition, the effects of consumption and lots more. If you want to change something, develop solutions or inspire others, you have to understand the issues and tasks first. Take part in this promising project and spring into action against climate change!

Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally heated swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including the hot river in Reykjadalur.

WF Iceland will also organise reasonably priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland can offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. Take a look at http://wf.is/excursions/

We will also focus on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will present their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.

    ● 위치

Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik.

    ● 숙박

Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a fully equipped bungalow consisting of several single and/or double bedrooms and a living room. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.

    Description of work:

During this camp participants can share their love for (and learn more about) photography, as well as global & local environmental issues. If you love taking photographs or want to learn / develop your photography skills and are also interested in topics such as: climate change, waste management, animal protection, sustainable solutions (& other environmental topics), then this project is for you!
While developing your artistic and technical photography skills, you will also be focusing on different current environmental and sustainability issues through a selection of workshops, discussions, and visits facilitated by SEEDS coordinators. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will also have time to put the theory into practice, and walk around and visually explore the city. At the end of the camp, a selection of the best photographs from the camp is made for an informal group exhibition at a local available public venue in the city. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible. Participants should be ready to walk around the city for different activities and visits.
We may also get the chance to visit local projects focused on environment and conservation, which can include hands-on volunteering activities or guided visits. Some examples include coastal and outdoors cleaning actions, a visit to a recycling centre, a geothermal power plant, a museum or exhibition or a community dinner at a local NGO. These, however, are dependent on the availability of our partners and the weather conditions at the time.
Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. Everybody is expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience. Participants should also take advantage of the opportunity to share about their own culture or country, such as food, music, games or films with the international group.
SEEDS programme combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, as exploring the capital city and some stunning nature attractions in the Golden Circle excursion or other visits part of the camp.
In this project SEEDS will organize a night photography and Aurora hunting (Northern Lights) workshop to the countryside in the close vicinity of Reykjavík. This will take place during late evening and possibly into the night. We cannot guarantee you will see northern lights as solar activity is irregular and it depends on weather and meteorological conditions but we will in any case organise the night photography workshop.
The Dark Music Days Festival is an annual festival of contemporary and new music, which takes place during the darkest period of the Icelandic winter. Please note that SEEDS does not provide tickets. If you want to purchase tickets please check their website for details: http://www.darkmusicdays.is

    Description of accomodation and food:

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with showers, kitchen, washing machine and everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared/dormitory rooms in a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
We will receive food supplies and the group will be in charge of the cooking and cleaning. Do not forget some traditional/typical food, drinks, music games or recipes from your country for the international evening.

Project Location: Worldwide Friends Iceland is opening a centre of environment and sustainability near to the crossroads to the West, South and North of Iceland. The centre called BRÚ is in the area of Hrutafjordur which is a 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra. In the neighbourhood you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, beaches full of driftwood, Snæfellsnes peninsula, glaciers in the highlands, waterfalls, strong rivers, canyons and craters. The purpose of the centre is to protect the nature in the area and to raise the awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors which are coming to the area. The house is more than 1.000 m² and has 16 double rooms, two kitchens, several bathrooms and common areas, rooms for workshops and galleries. It has its own generator to produce electricity for heating and daily use.

Work: This camp has different kind of tasks. Some days we will focus on renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around and inside the house. We will also do some artwork for example paintings and sculptures made of driftwood. Other days we will clean the coastline and/or plant trees in the area. We will give a special focus on global warming and the volunteers will have workshops about climate changes. In addition to the theoretical part we are going to practice sustainable work. For example, planting trees is one of the main exercises of the camps. Planting trees becomes a very useful action against climate change because trees absorb carbon dioxide, clean the air and prevent erosions. Take part in this promising project and spring into action against climate change! When the forecast for the auroras borealis (Northern lights) are favourable we will go for aurora hunting.

This work camp is a way to enjoy an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while they are exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.

Leisure: WF Iceland will organize reasonably priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. The area around the place is also great for hiking.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

During your stay, the Winter Lights Festival will take place. Darkness will be illuminated by light shows and a lot of events take place around the city. Usually there is also the Museums and the Pool night. Most events are free of charge. For more information and details, please check http://winterlightsfestival.is/

    ● 위치

Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik.
