Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Every year, Special Olympics Belgium organises the National Games. In 2026, the Games will be held in Hautes-Fagnes. More than 3,000 athletes, accompanied by 1,200 coaches, are taking part in the Games in around twenty sports disciplines.

Changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport and promoting their social inclusion. This has been the mission of Special Olympics since it was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in the United States. And it works! Since then, Special Olympics has become an international movement active in 193 countries, with more than 5.5 million athletes with a mental disability taking part in adapted sports training and Olympic-type sports competitions, as well as participating in the Healthy Athletes Programme and much more.

Special Olympics Belgium was founded in 1979 and is officially recognized by the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee. It organises National Games every year (alternatively in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia) and send delegations of Belgian athletes to the Winter and Summer Special Olympics World Games. These competitions are open to any athlete with intellectual disability who regularly practise a sport at his/her own level. More than just a physical and sport training, these activities enhance the social development of the athletes.

The Opening Ceremony (with Torch Run) and Games will take place from 14th to 16th of May 2026.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
GNIST Festival is a music and art festival created by and for young people, located outside the big cities. It’s a two-day celebration filled with live music, art exhibitions, community dance, techno yoga, talks, short films, and much more. We celebrate youth spirit, creativity, culture, and all kinds of art and music.

    Description of work:
    PHASE ONE: PREPARATION
During this phase, the festival starts to take shape. We build everything from the ground up — starting with tents and practical setups, and finishing with the small final details.

Every year we come up with new ideas and plans, and we decorate the entire area. This includes building graffiti walls, painting signs, and placing creative elements around the festival site.

There will, of course, be plenty of time at the beginning to get to know each other. We really value it if participants want to contribute with creative ideas and help us shape the festival.

    PHASE TWO: THE FESTIVAL
This is the most fun phase! This is when we open the festival we’ve created together over the past few days.

During this time, you can relax, hang out with the other volunteers and guests, listen to music, and enjoy the festival atmosphere.

    PHASE THREE: CLEANING
This phase starts Sunday morning, when guests begin heading home. We pack everything down, and it usually goes quite fast, so we finish on Sunday. Volunteers can leave either Sunday or Monday morning.

    FREETIME
Since the camp is short, there are no full days off. As we get closer to the festival, there will be more to do.

From Tuesday to Thursday, working hours are approximately 10:00 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. On Friday and Saturday, there will be more free time, as more volunteers join. This gives you the chance to meet Danish people and experience the festival.

    Description of location and leisure:
The festival area is close to the sea and located in the countryside. It is an old military missile launcher site, now empty except for two garages that we use.

The event takes place in the middle of May, so it’s a good idea to bring warm fleeces and cozy clothes, as we will be outside most of the day.

Meeting Point and Time: Meeting Point and Time:
    Store Heddinge St.
    May 11th between 12:00-16:00.

    Arrival at Copenhagen Airport
To reach the meeting point on time, your flight should arrive no later than 13:00 on the first day of the camp.

From the airport, take a train to Copenhagen Central Station. From there, take a train to Køge Station, where you can catch a local train to Store Heddinge Station. This is where we will pick you up.

The total travel time from the airport to the meeting point is approximately 2 hours, and the cost is around €20. Please let us know if anything changes so we can help you.

Further details on travel arrangements and purchasing train or bus tickets will be provided in your info sheet after acceptance.

    Sleeping Facilities
The festival has a sleeping area where both guests and volunteers will stay in tents during the festival days. We will also sleep there in the days leading up to the festival.

We can provide tents, so you only need to bring a sleeping bag and an air mattress or something similar. Let us know if you are missing anything — we might be able to lend it to you.

    Kitchen + Bathroom Facilities
A trailer bathroom will be available when you arrive.

Each day, one hot meal will be prepared by our local chef, Jens. The other meals will be simple toasts or sandwiches that we make ourselves.

When the festival begins, there will also be food stands and community dining available.

    Description of work:
As a volunteer at the Aalborg City Cup, you will play an essential role in making one of Northern Europe’s largest youth football tournaments a success. Each year, around 300 teams and 8,000–10,000 visitors come from across Europe to participate in and watch the games. To ensure the event runs smoothly, volunteers will help in various areas, including event setup, food service, information support, and venue maintenance. Your tasks will change throughout the day, keeping things dynamic and engaging! On the first day, you’ll sit down with the host to create a work plan and choose the assignments that interest you most—so be sure to read about the different tasks in advance. That way, you can hit the ground running and make the most of your experience!

    Event Area Setup
Before the tournament starts, volunteers will help prepare the event area. This includes marking and setting up the 21 football fields, arranging seating areas, and making sure that everything is in place for the opening of the tournament. Volunteers may also assist with setting up banners, signs, and equipment needed for the matches and fan areas. You can also assist in one of the many food trucks on the grounds. It’s a great opportunity to meet people from different countries while contributing to the overall hospitality of the event.
Work hours: 06:00 – 22:30, which is divided between breakfast serving from 06:00-10:30 and dinner serving from 16:00-20:00

    Information Center Support
The information center is the heart of the event’s organization, where teams and guests can come for assistance. Volunteers will be responsible for checking in teams upon arrival, handing out tournament schedules, answering general questions, and helping lost guests find their way around. This role requires good communication skills and a friendly attitude, as volunteers will interact with international visitors and ensure they have a great experience at the tournament.
    Work hours:
    17:00 – 22:00 (on Wednesday)
09:00-22:00 (on Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

    Cleaning & Maintenance
To keep the event area welcoming for players and visitors, volunteers will help with regular cleaning and waste management throughout the tournament. This includes collecting trash, ensuring restrooms and common areas are clean, and keeping the playing fields tidy. This task is crucial in maintaining a professional and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone attending the Aalborg City Cup.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Open Houses is a non-profit network that has organised international volunteer workcamps and building projects at historic sites in Germany since the mid-1980s. Its work is rooted in the idea of opening historic places as spaces for common responsibility, intercultural exchange, and non-commercial encounter.

The organisation supports the revitalisation and long-term care of historic buildings and cultural landscapes through volunteer engagement, focusing on everyday maintenance, small-scale renovation, and community-based use of heritage sites. Rather than acting as a sole operator, Open Houses works as an initiator and facilitator, cooperating with site owners, local actors, and partner organisations.

At Lohra Castle, Open Houses coordinates volunteer-based site care and ensures that the castle remains a living place for cultural activities, educational initiatives, and international exchange. The organisation provides overall project coordination, accommodation, work supervision, and group support throughout the workcamp.

    Description of work:
Volunteers will take part in seasonal maintenance and site care activities that support the everyday functioning and long-term preservation of Lohra Castle and its surrounding grounds. The work focuses on keeping the historic ensemble and its open spaces accessible, safe, and well maintained.

Tasks include mowing and collecting overgrown grass, clearing organic material from paths and public areas, maintaining open spaces around the castle buildings, and assisting with the cleaning and upkeep of communal halls and shared facilities.

Although the project does not involve technical heritage conservation, the work plays an essential role in sustainable heritage management. Through their contribution, volunteers support the continued use of the castle for cultural, educational, and community activities, whose income is reinvested into conservation and restoration programmes.

    ● 위치

    Burg Lohra

    Description of location and leisure:
Lohra Castle is located in northern Thuringia, close to the Harz low mountain range, in a rural area characterised by forests, hills, and protected natural landscapes. The castle has medieval origins dating back to the 11th century and developed over several centuries from a fortified complex into a mixed residential and agricultural ensemble. Notable features include a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, traces of medieval fortifications and towers, a Renaissance-era manor house, and later farm buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. After decades of abandonment, the site has been gradually revitalised since the 1990s and today functions as a place for cultural activities, education, and volunteer-based site care.

The next small towns are Bleicherode (approx. 6 km) and Nordhausen (approx. 20 km). The castle stands slightly above the surrounding villages and is reached via a forest road and walking paths.

The workcamp takes place in a quiet, countryside setting. Volunteers should not expect urban leisure infrastructure, but rather a nature-oriented environment and simple village surroundings. In their free time, participants can go for walks or hikes in the protected natural area, relax at the castle, or organise informal group activities such as games, music evenings, campfires, or shared cooking.

Depending on the group’s interests, short excursions to nearby towns or cultural sites can be organised together during the stay.

Meeting Point and Time: The meeting point is the bus stop Großlohra – Friedrichslohra / Wartehalle.

If you arrive by train, travel to Gebra / Hainleite railway station. From the station, walk a few metres in the direction of the village to the nearby bus stop and take bus 29 in the direction of Nordhausen. Get off at Friedrichslohra / Wartehalle.

If you miss the bus, it is possible to walk from Gebra / Hainleite towards the castle area (approx. 1 hour). The route includes a steep uphill section, therefore light and easy-to-carry luggage is strongly recommended.

Detailed arrival information and exact arrival times will be sent to selected volunteers in advance.
    The nearest airport: BER
The nearest terminal (train-, bus-, taxi station): Nearest train station: Gebra / Hainleite (approx. 5 km)
Nearest bus stop: Großlohra – Friedrichslohra / Wartehalle (approx. 1 km)

Further rail connections are available via Nordhausen (approx. 20 km).

    ● 숙박

    Description of accommodation and food:
Volunteers will be accommodated in small historic service buildings within the castle complex, in shared rooms with simple but adequate facilities. Rooms are arranged for 2–5 people. Showers and toilets are available, with limited hot water. The overall living conditions are basic, reflecting the historic character of the site.

A fully equipped communal kitchen is located in a separate historic building near the accommodation. Meals are prepared collectively as part of community life, and each participant will be involved in cooking during the stay. Volunteers are encouraged to bring recipes from their home countries to share food traditions with the group.

Accommodation and food during the project are provided by the hosting organisation. Any participation fees charged by sending organisations are not transferred to the host and remain with the sending organisation.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
The social cooperatives I Locandieri were born from the idea of cooperation between individuals and institutions, with the mission of generating social and economic value for the benefit of as many people as possible. They offer services to people, especially migrants, and since 2008 they have been welcoming migrants in two communities, including minors and families. One of their missions is to give new life to the confiscated property. Over the years they have given back to the community places confiscated from crime, transforming them into communities for migrants and sports facilities for children, young people and migrants living in Castelvetrano.Il Giardino delle Arance is another confiscated property that has been returned to the community: a small building from the late 18th century with three hectares of land that has been renovated to become a home for minors; a cottage that will become a space-lab for the processing of home-grown agri-food products and a shop to sell the garden s produce. Outside, there are 2 hectares of citrus groves and 1 hectare of land where an intensive organic vegetable garden has been created to implement an ambitious socio-economic project.

    Description of work:
Volunteers will support the members of the cooperative in the maintenance of the organic vegetable garden, in particular in the cultivation, sowing and harvesting, in the setting up of the fruit and vegetable shop. Some renovation work can be organised according to the needs of the place. The work is mainly manual and is only organised in the mornings due to the high temperatures (between 7:00 - 12:00). Afternoons are free and volunteers can explore the surrounding area or take public transport to the beach. Depending on the interest of the volunteers, it is possible to organise workshops to decorate the interior of the house. At the end of the workcamp, there could be a cooking workshop with the volunteers of the cooperative and the young migrants hosted by the cooperative. Study part: Members of the cooperative will share their stories and experiences of managing property confiscated from organised crime and their knowledge of organic farming.
