ORGANISATION
Greenlandic Children carries out social activities in Greenland and Denmark for Greenlandic children and young people in vulnerable life situations. We work to ensure that no Greenlandic child grows up in poverty, abuse, or neglect. Children must be heard and involved, and many more Greenlandic children and young people must have an education.
We emphasize that our efforts are established in close cooperation with local authorities, organizations, professionals, children, and young people and with respect for local needs, wishes, culture, and language.
Greenlandic Children currently has ten ongoing projects in Greenland and Denmark and is present in all Greenlandic municipalities, as well as in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Randers, and Vejle. The organization has 30 employees and more than 100 volunteers. The projects are financed by public funds, foundations, support, and sponsorship from companies as well as private members and contributors.
In 2018 we received the Crown Prince Couple's Social Prize.
WORK
Greenlandic Children wants Camp Nuan to give the inhabitants a fantastic, creative, active, and interesting summer. The activities will take place Monday through Friday 12.00-18.00, and will fall into these categories: Music, Dance, Singing, Games, Sports, and Excursions. The volunteers will decide which activities to offer during the camp.
You should expect long days and it is expected that you will participate in all activities. On Saturdays, we will invite the entire township to a social event from 18.00-21.00. This could be a night of music and dancing, teaching each other to play an instrument, cooking food from your home country, movie night, etc.
LOCATION
Nanortalik, Greenland
LOCATION AND LEISURE
We have been doing work camps every summer since 2014. Greenlandic Children is cooperating with the local community in Nanortalik. Nanortalik is located on the island of Nanortalik at the mouth of the Tasermiut fjord. Nanortalik is the most southern town in Greenland but is still approx. 100 km away northwest of the southernmost point, Cape Farewell (Kap Farvel). The town was founded as a trading post in 1797 but was moved to its current location in 1830. Nanortalik is the smallest of three towns in the Municipality of Kujalleq. 1095 people are living in the town, where 295 are under the age of 19 years.
Fishing and catching have long been the main occupations in Nanortalik, but in recent years, occupations such as tourism and mining have grown, as Greenland's only gold mine can be found near Nanortalik.
Telephone coverage might be scarce, and the internet connection might be bad.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
Nearest airport: Copenhagen Airport
Nearest train station: Copenhagen Airport
Flight tickets:
Do not buy your plane ticket to Copenhagen (Denmark) before MS Denmark contacts you personally and allows it. Otherwise, the Association of Greenlandic Children cannot be responsible for the tickets if the Work Camp is canceled.
The whole Work Camp group will meet at Copenhagen Airport and travel to Greenland together. There are very few departures to Greenland, and the group must travel together. Your plane tickets will therefore be organized and bought by the Association of Greenlandic Children, whereafter you will transfer the money to them. We will provide you with banking details, and payment deadline over e-mail.
Since the price of tickets is very high, and some volunteers already have an added travel expense for flying to Copenhagen, the Association has decided to base the price of tickets on your departure country:
4000 DKK (approx. 540€) if you come from outside of Europe.
6000 DKK (approx. 800€): if you come from Europe (Russia incl.).
8000 DKK (approx. 1075€): if you come from the Nordic Countries: (Denmark, Sweden, Norway)
For example:
If you travel from Italy to Denmark, you will only pay 800€ for your ticket from Denmark to Greenland, as you are already paying for a ticket from Italy to Denmark.
The travel will consist of a direct flight from Copenhagen to Narsarsuaq and from there a helicopter flight or boat ride from Narsarsuaq to Nanortalik. This will depend on whether and availability, and we will know for sure in May. The route from Narsarsuaq to Nanortalik is very scenic and you will get a front-row seat to both stunning mountains and green valleys.
Meeting time in Copenhagen
You will have to buy your ticket to and from Copenhagen. The meeting time in Copenhagen Airport can be very early on departure day, so it will be necessary to spend one night in Copenhagen before traveling to Greenland, to make sure that you do not arrive too late to meet the group. We generally also recommend that you arrive a few days before leaving for Greenland so that you can see Copenhagen and maybe meet your fellow participants.
Greenlandic Children will pay for one night in Copenhagen, for the people traveling from abroad. We have booked beds in dorm rooms from the 7th to the 8th of July at Steel House Copenhagen, a central hostel close to the train station and metro.
The meeting point is Copenhagen Airport on the 8th of July in the early morning hours. You must be at the airport on time. We will provide you with the departure time on the 8th.
Departure from Greenland
When we depart Greenland and fly to Copenhagen (Denmark), the flight can be delayed due to bad weather. We, therefore, recommend that you plan to stay two extra nights in Copenhagen before leaving on your flight to your home country in case we get stuck in Greenland.
As nobody is in control over the weather situation, we of course recommend that you buy travel insurance, to cover your flight expenses, in case we are so delayed from Greenland, that you will also miss your flight to Copenhagen.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD
Sleeping + bathroom facilities:
You will stay in a shared bedroom with other volunteers of the same sex. You will sleep at the local school where kitchen and bathroom facilities will also be available.
Meals + kitchen facilities:
All groceries are transported by ship. Therefore, you should be able to adapt to these local conditions or bring a small stock of goods yourself. It can be challenging to be vegetarian or vegan since many meals in Greenland are based on meat and fish.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR ANY KIND OF INTOXICANTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT ANY TIME OR CIRCUMSTANCE. VIOLATION OF THIS RULE WILL LEAD TO IMMEDIATE EXCLUSION FROM THE CAMP.
We will divide the volunteers into cooking and cleaning teams. The group is responsible for shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. which is also going to take up some of your time every day.

REMARKS (other information)
Clothing:
The average temperatures in Nanortalik in June/July are between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is good to have layers of clothing (inner layers preferably of wool), gloves, and headbands.
Language:
It is required that you speak English. The main languages in Nanortalik are Greenlandic and Danish but many children speak English well.
Volunteer profile:
We preferably work from a diversity mindset, but, as the locals have requested outdoor/wilderness activities, disc golf, and climbing we are looking for volunteers with specific skills in these areas. Also, we appreciate volunteers who like to bake and cook with children. We welcome a positive approach to recycling and creativity as well.
We welcome all volunteers, including Greenlandic volunteers, international volunteers, and Danish volunteers.
20-40 years
Everyone is welcome to apply but volunteers within the age group are preferred.
Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Ungdomsøen (aka Youth Island) is an island located just a short ferry ride from Copenhagen.
Ungdomsøen’s mission is to strengthen young people in their journey to become active, committed, and curious citizens who take responsibility for each other, for their communities, and for the development of our societies.
The island is an old sea fortress full of places to hide and get lost. In 2015 it was acquired and donated to the Danish scout movement. With major help from foundations and after 4 years of renovation, 130 million DKK and 70.000 hours of voluntary work, Ungdomsøen opened in August 2019 and is now invaded by the youth.
Ungdomsøen has an area of 50,000 m2. Inside the island there is more than 16,000 m2 and 1.8 km of underground pathways, so even though the island may seem small from the distance there is plenty of space for activities and expeditions.
All of our actions at Ungdomsøen are based on our vision: To be an Island for the youth. Everything we do on the Island aims at creating an inviting environment/project for, with and by young people.
Your main contacts will be two young volunteers, Leander & Kristian, who have lived on the Island since august 2022.
If you want to know more about the Island and our visions, check out: https://nordeafonden.dk/about-nordea-fonden/the-youth- island-in-oersund (English)
Description of work:
You will actively contribute to renovating and creating an inviting and exciting environment on the Island. As stated, this is an Island for the youth, which is why this Work Camp will focus on projects that aim at building, renovating, and fixing e.g., nice outdoor facilities (e.g., a pizza oven, outdoor kitchen, lounge furniture) and helping the operations team with projects.
We will be ready to help and guide you throughout the camp, so there are no expectations of your previous practical experience. The most important thing is that you want to join us in creating the best possible place for the youth to hang out and realize their dreams.
At Ungdomsøen we value the environment, so we will do our very best effort to make sure that we build sustainably and environmentally friendly through and through.
Ungdomsøen is a place full of potential and opportunities. A place to hang out, do activities, and create encounters between young people of all kinds. It is of utmost importance, that we create the most awesome environment from where awesome projects can arise.
The place where the project/workcamp will take place: You will be working and living on the island. The Island is in the Sound, between Denmark and Sweden (Øresund) The address is: Middelgrundsfortet 1, 1433 København
Description of location and leisure:
You are going to spend your off-time on the Island; thus, we will be planning some social activities like kayaking, stand-up- paddle-boarding, campfires, and day trips to Copenhagen.

Age : 19-27
Short remarks for the project:
Be aware, as we are on an Island the possibilities of leaving the camp to go shopping etc. after the end of work, are quite limited. Overall prepare yourself on spending lots of time outdoors enjoying the amazing view and breeze from the sea. In case of bad weather, we do have plenty of indoor spaces and facilities that we can use. But most of the work will be done outside, on the island in the middle of the ocean where it can be windy, so bring cloth for both warm and cold weather.
Grobund Festival is a 6 days long festival with over 600 guests
The festival concept is: build your own festival.
It is a building festival, and its goal is to enhance learning, craft skills, cultural exchange and make a movement around co-creation. Our goal is to create a sustainable festival with a focus on zero waste and re-planting.
At the festival, people can choose to build their own projects or join other projects. They provide free tools and recycled building materials for everyone. Even though Grobund focuses on the building aspect, the festival is so much more, featuring workshops during the day and live bands and DJ ́s every night.
It is a co-creation festival, everyone helps to create the experience.
The festival is only a small project part of a much greater project and vision. The large project called 'Grobund' (meaning fertile soil) was founded by 160 people who received money to buy a large factory and 10 hectares of land, with the ambition of making a new off-grid house and eco-village.
The aim of the Work Camp is to help create the best possible building festival.
Week 1: During this week, the volunteers will be setting up the festival by sorting wood, moving materials around and making signs and decorations for the festival.
You will also be working in the building area, bar, outdoor kitchen, dishwashing area, toilets, sleeping area and the music stage. This week, the volunteers will take turns in cooking for each other.
Week 2: During this week, the festival will take place. You will be working in different areas of responsibility. You will be checking tickets in the ”check-in zone,” assisting in the kitchen, working with kids in the ”kids zone,” and assisting in the “tool shop.”
The festival will also need one or two volunteers to work with taking photos and videos for social media posts. Note that all festival guests are also assigned to a minimum of one volunteer shift (bar shifts, kitchen shifts, toilet maintenance and cleaning shifts), as the concept is a co-creating festival.
Week 3: During this week, you will be taking the festival apart, and cleaning up the festival area. Ground's focus on zero waste and sustainability means that you will be saving on building projects for next year's festival. Further, you will be evaluating the Work Camp stay and the festival in general.
Your Work Camp leaders will help you and the group with organising activities in your spare time. It is free to enjoy the beautiful nature of Ebeltoft, but some activities might require an extra charge. The host will not cover additional charges.
The place where the project/workcamp will take place: Work Camp site: Kaarsbergvej 2 8400 Ebeltoft
The festival is located by the sea (with its own sandy beach), in the countryside, but only five kilometres from Ebeltoft – a lovely small city known as a great tourist destination.
In your spare time, there are many things to do and see, and you can borrow a bike to explore the surrounding area. Some days it might be possible to borrow a car to take a trip, maybe to see Mols National Park or Denmark's second-largest city, Aarhus (45 minutes away by car).

Accommodation:
Everyone should bring a minimum of a sleeping bag and a pillow.
From experience, we know that some people might not want to stay in tents due to temperatures (normally ranges 10-25 degrees celsius, with a few days of heavy winds). Therefore, there will be an option to borrow a mattress and sleep inside in a big room with others.
Most people will be sleeping in tents - festival style! We recommend that you bring your own tent. We will try to get tents for everyone who wants one but we can’t make promises before we know how many need one.
Food:
Everyone will take part in cooking, according to a plan we decide on together, as part of the work you will do during your stay. During the festival, we will have food served three times a day (all vegan/ vegetarian). We all clean together.
Available vegetarian food: Yes
Bathroom Facilities:
We have washing machines for free, kitchen facilities, toilets and showers. We encourage everyone to swim at the beach located a few hundred meters away.
English
In regards to COVID-19, it is our ambition to complete our Work Camps this summer, but it is essential for us, that our volunteers feel safe during the time they spend at our camps. This is why we constantly keep ourselves updated on the situation and we follow the Danish government's instructions. Furthermore, we are ready to answer any questions that you might have, and we will keep all our volunteers updated right up until the start of the Work Camp. Your Work Camp host will have guidelines on how to handle COVID-19 during your stay, including how to handle isolation and enforcement of government guidelines. We are looking for people who are open-minded, social and self-motivated. We expect that you treat both nature and others with respect. We do not require any previous experience but value a wide range of competencies. We hope that you are eager to be a part of a team and create an incredible experience for yourself and others. English will be the only language spoken. All participants must be willing to speak English, even though being from the same country or have trouble with the English language. Try your best! Please also bring appropriate working shoes and clothes both indoor and outdoor - the style does not matter.
